Sundance Film Festival 1999 Poster. 24" wide by 36" tall.

The Sundance Film Festival continued to be the premiere showcase for American independent film in 1999, even as it explored the meaning of that term. Four films (AMERICAN MOVIE, AMERICAN HOLLOW, AMERICAN PIMP, and AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY) wore their nationality on their title. And the year's big winner, Tony Bui's THREE SEASONS - which won the Grand Jury Prize, the Audience Award, and the Excellence in Cinematography Award - was shot entirely in Vietnam and mostly in Vietnamese. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to Independent Vision went to Laura Dern. But the big prize went to a little video experiment called THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, which went on to scare up big business at the box office.
